ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — The future of the Ithaca Gun Smokestack remains unclear.

According to the Ithaca Voice, a local consulting firm was selected by the city’s Planning and Economic Development Committee on Wednesday. Vertical Access, which is based in Ithaca, is proposing a fee of over $33,000 to assess the conditions of the smokestack.

The Common Council is expected to vote on the proposal at their meeting in September.

Earlier this year, the city sought opinions from the public on whether or not the smokestack should be saved. Results showed overwhelming support for its preservation.
