ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Ithaca Fire Department is asking the public to be cautious while burning vegetation outdoors.
An IFD engine, brush unit, and a chief responded to the 1000 block of Taughannock Boulevard just before 1:00 p.m. Tuesday for a reported brush fire. A resident was burning outdoors, and dry and windy conditions caused the nearby embankment to catch ablaze.
Lieutenant Jim Wheal tells WHCU crews were on scene for about an hour putting the fire out and wetting down the surrounding area. No injuries or property damage was sustained. Wheal adds when burning outdoors to avoid windy days and have water close by in case the fire gets out of control.
