ALBANY, N.Y. (WHCU) – Governor Hochul is moving to help volunteer fire departments across New York.

Hochul is launching the state’s first training stipend program to help stabilize departments and boost recruiting. A total of $10 million has been earmarked in the state budget for the new initiative, with stipends ranging from $500 to $1250 for required courses.

“Volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line to protect those in their communities, and it is time that we recognize and compensate them for the work that they have done,” said Hochul. “These stipends will allow our fighters to continue serving their communities while also being able to provide for their families.”
