ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – FEMA will have info sessions in Ithaca about flood maps and insurance.

FEMA, NYSDEC, and Tompkins County officials will be available at two open houses to answer questions about recently updated flood insurance rate maps for Tompkins County. In January, FEMA released preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for public comment in Tompkins County. It’s the first time the FIRMs have been updated since the 1980s.

The map changes mean some homes could be considered high-risk and would require insurance for the first time. The open houses will not have formal presentations. Residents can attend at any time for any length of time. FEMA officials will help attendees assess their risk and how to navigate available resources to make their property safer. Officials ask that you bring your flood insurance declaration page if you’re already insured. Additional map and insurance resources are available.
