ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – An Elmira man pleads guilty in Tompkins County Court to crimes resulting in another man’s death.
District Attorney Matthew Van Houten made the announcement today. As part of his plea, 32-year-old Jonathon Roberts admitted to operating a motor vehicle in an impaired condition in the early morning hours of March 19, 2022, in the Town of Newfield, causing the death of 49-year-old Joseph Arguello, of New Mexico.
Manslaughter is the most serious crime in the four-count indictment, which also includes reckless driving, criminally negligent homicide, and leaving the scene of a personal injury incident without reporting.
The maximum possible sentence is a term of five to fifteen years in New York State Prison. A statement from the District Attorney’s Office said, “no promises were made by the prosecution or the Court with regard to the prospective sentence.”
Roberts waived his right to an appeal. He is scheduled to be sentenced before County Court Judge John C. Rowley on April 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m.
