CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) – Two elected officials are getting into the spirit of competition ahead of an upcoming football game.

The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons are set to square off against the North Central College Cardinals for the Division III NCAA Championship on Friday. Cortland Mayor Scott Steve, and Naperville, Illinois Mayor Scott Wehrli are engaging in a friendly challenge to foster spirit and support for their local college sports teams.

“This mayoral challenge is a fantastic opportunity for our communities to come together and celebrate our local sports talent,” said Mayor Scott Steve. “We encourage everyone to show their support for our teams and join us in making this year’s Stagg Bowl an unforgettable celebration of sportsmanship and community.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli.

“As a North Central College alum, I’m incredibly proud of our student-athletes,” said Wehrli. “Good sportsmanship and being your personal best on and off the field is part of the Cardinal culture, and this friendly competition helps us celebrate those important life lessons.”

While the winner will enjoy unlimited bragging rights, the losing mayor has agreed to wear the winning team’s jersey to a City Council meeting.

“I hope that Mayor Wehrli looks good in SUNY Cortland red,” said Mayor Scott Steve.

Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on Friday in Salem, Virginia.
