CORTLAND, NY (WHCU) – A Cortland man is facing charges after police say he tried to steal a truck.

The City of Cortland Police responded to a business on Huntington Street just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday for a report of a suspicious person breaking glass. Officers say they found windows and a large glass door smashed out, and 18-year-old Mason Aleba trying to drive off in a Ryder truck that belongs to the business.

Authorities say Aleba was intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with felony attempted grand larceny, felony criminal mischief, and two misdemeanors for drinking and driving.

Aleba allegedly slipped out of his handcuffs at the police station and tried to run away. Officers say he slammed into a locked exit door. Aleba was additionally charged with misdemeanor escape.

Aleba is scheduled to appear in Cortland City Court on June 10.
