CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) — More children in Cortland County have lead poisoning than in New York State.

That’s according to the Cortland County Health Department, which says 39 per 1,000 children six or younger have a high blood lead level, compared to 10 per 1,000 children tested statewide.

In addition, 91-percent of homes in the county built before 1930 still have lead paint, which was banned by the FDA in 1978.

The data is part of the Cortland County Health Department Lead Poisoning Needs Assessment.
