CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) — Flags in Cortland County are being lowered to half-staff to tribute to two Onondaga County officers killed in the line of duty.

An officer at the Syracuse Police Department and an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office were killed Sunday night in a shootout, which also left the alleged gunman dead. Police say the officers were tracking down a stolen car.

Legislative Chair Kevin Fitch says it’s important to come together in times of tragedy. He’s calling on everyone to ‘stand united in honoring the legacy of these officers.’ Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile says they ‘lost two heroes.’

In addition, flags are also being lowered at the Cayuga County Office Building in downtown Auburn.
