ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Tompkins County leaders are considering calling on Governor Hochul.

The legislature is reviewing a resolution that would urge the governor to protect the water quality at Cayuga Lake. Officials fear the Cargill salt mine beneath the lake could collapse and contaminate the water.

The proposal would urge Hochul to require an environmental review of the mine’s operations, and require an end-of-life plan to address a safe closure. Cargill is reportedly planning to sell the mine.

Legislators will discuss the resolution at tonight’s meeting, which starts at 5:30 PM.
