ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) has announced its new president.

Dr. Silvia Restrepo, a leader in the field of plant pathology and microbiology, will be the non-profit research institution’s ninth president in its 99-year history when she takes over this fall.

“We are thrilled to welcome Silvia to BTI,” said current President David Stern. “Her extensive experience and numerous accomplishments in experimental plant science and scientific leadership align perfectly with BTI’S mission. She will be an inspirational leader who will propel BTI researchers and staff to new heights of discovery and impact.”

Restrepo’s ascension to the top of BTI comes with a pair of milestones.

Restrepo was born in Bogota, Colombia, where she is currently the Vice President for Research and Creation at Universidad de Los Andes, as well as a professor in the Chemical and Food Department. Restrepo earned her Ph.D. from the University of the Sciences Pierre and Marie Currie in Paris, France. She also lived in New York, spending time in Ithaca and Geneva as a Cornell University postdoctoral associate in the early 2000s.

Restrepo’s experience in other cultures and countries will suit her well in her role.

“Silvia is an outstanding scientist, leader, and innovator who will bring BTI extensive strategic planning experience, a background in leading and managing diverse teams, a pioneering scientific career in plant pathology, and a connection to an international network of leaders,” said Vice Chair of BTI’s Board of Directors, Paul Chomet.

Restrepo says climate change and its effects on agriculture are not localized, and global issues require global collaboration for solutions.

Restrepo says sustainability will be the driving force behind her work at BTI.

For her part, Restrepo is looking forward to returning to a place where she has rich memories, despite only living in the Ithaca area for four years.

Dr. Silvia Restrepo will take over at BTI in October 2023.
