UPDATE 2/22/23 – The order has been lifted per the Cayuga County Health Department.
GENOA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Residents in the Town of Genoa are under a boil water order.
The Cayuga County Health Department says residents that use public water should bring tap water to a rolling boil, let it boil for a minute, and cool before using. Properly boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until further notice.
A water main break Friday created a loss in water pressure. Officials say the chance that harmful microbes can enter the water increases when pressure is lost. These kinds of contaminants can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, and other symptoms. They can be especially harmful to infants, people with compromised immune systems, and some elderly.
Repairs are underway. The Town of Genoa will take samples to confirm there is no contamination in the water system before lifting the order. Officials say the order will remain in effect for several days and residents will be notified by the Health Department when it is.
