ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Authorities have charged ten people for their alleged roles in the death of an Ithaca man reported missing in May, and more arrests are coming.
The State Police, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, and Ithaca Police Department (IPD) held a press conference today to announce that Thomas Rath, who at the time was 33, was the victim of kidnapping and homicide.

It’s been 100 days since Rath went missing from the Ithaca Jungle. On May 20, the Ithaca Police Department received a call urging them to conduct a welfare check on Rath. Less than a week later on May 26, IPD received more information that suggested Rath’s disappearance occurred under ‘suspicious circumstances,’ at which time IPD requested the State Police (NYSP) get involved.
On May 31, a tip was received that Rath was seen inside a residence at 70 Benjamin Hill Road in Newfield. A search warrant was issued and executed on that date.
On June 2, a multi-agency foot search was conducted in the woods near the residence, followed by 40 more search warrants executed at various locations in the weeks that followed. Authorities say a ‘significant’ amount of interviews and follow-ups occurred with residents in the Jungle.
On August 3, Rath’s remains were located in a shallow grave on state lands on Ekroos Road in the Town of Candor, Tioga County. On August 16, authorities began arresting and charging suspects, with the most recent arrest occurring on August 24. One suspect was located and arrested in the State of Maine. The suspects and charges are listed below.
Angelo Baez, 48, Ithaca – murder in the second degree, kidnapping first degree
Jonathon Glennon, 31, Ithaca – murder in the second degree (currently at Androscoggin Jail, Maine)

Jack Benjamin Jr., 39, Ithaca -kidnapping first degree

Authorities say the crime will be prosecuted in Tioga County by District Attorney Kirk Martin because Rath was discovered in Candor. The cause of death was not revealed due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, though officials say it was not random act and forensic results show Rath was killed within 24 hours of his abduction. A motive will be addressed in court proceedings.
Anyone with further information relevant to the case is encouraged to contact NYSP or IPD.
