AUBURN, N.Y. (WHCU) – A former Cayuga County physician has agreed to settle with the federal government.
Dr. Jang Boo Chi and his medical practice in Auburn will pay $135,000 in civil penalties to the United States for overprescribing drugs in dangerous combinations. Chi violated the Controlled Substances Act by writing prescriptions for illegitimate medical purposes, including muscle relaxers, Adderall, fentanyl patches, Oxycodone, Percocet, and other opioids.
The United States alleges that Dr. Chi allowed patients to dictate his prescribing decisions instead of his own judgment and continued to do so despite red flags that suggested his patients were misusing the medicine. In one instance, drug screenings indicated that a patient of his was not using the medications prescribed but Dr. Chi continued to prescribe it.
As part of the settlement, Dr. Chi has surrendered his DEA registration for 15 years, meaning he will be unable to prescribe medicine during that time.
