ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – Kendal at Ithaca now has nearly two dozen volunteers certified to help people with dementia.

In late June, 21 residents completed a comprehensive seminar on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care. The training was given by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP). The NCCDP seeks to “lead a global transformation in care for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, cultivating a future where all caregivers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and empathy to treat individuals living with cognitive change.”
Kendal residents called for the course during a strategic planning session. Officials say having volunteers on -site will enhance the quality of life for people living with dementia.

“We are incredibly proud to be the first community to partner with NCCDP for this certification,” said Kendal Life Engagement Manager, Maria Giampaolo. “Kendal at Ithaca’s resident enthusiasm for this training underscores the values of volunteerism and continuous education that are core to the community’s inclusive values.”
Kendal at Ithaca plans to offer another training opportunity later in 2024.
