CANDOR, N.Y. (WHCU) — The clock is ticking for the Candor Central School District to change its mascot.
In November, the State Education Department told all school districts that Native American team names and logos must be replaced by the end of the academic year. Violators face the withholding of state aid.
Candor’s mascot is currently an Indian. Superintendent Brent Suddaby says the district will move forward with a new mascot. He says the school board and administration are committed to addressing the change in a “thoughtful and respectful way.”
Officials will meet on Tuesday to talk about a new team name.
