ITHACA, NY (WHCU) – State officials are asking you to give turtles a brake.
The DEC says to be cautious on roads and slow down, especially near rivers and marshy areas, as turtles are on the move this time of year looking for sandy places to lay their eggs.
New York loses thousands of turtles to vehicle collisions annually, and most land-native species in New York are declining. It can take up to ten years for some species to reach maturity, and the death of a single breeding female can significantly affect the local population.
Most turtles can be safely picked up and moved off the roadway in the direction they’re facing. However, use extreme caution when approaching a snapping turtle. Only pick them up by the rear of the shell or use a car mat to drag them safely across the road.
Never pick any turtle species up by their tail, it can cause significant injury. Additionally, do not take any home. All native New York turtle species are protected by law.
