LANSING, N.Y. (WHCU) — A Tompkins County lawmaker wants to honor a former wrestling coach.

Legislator Mike Sigler thinks the State Route 34B Bridge in Lansing should be named after Doug Dake.

“His son Kyle was a star wrestler at Cornell and went on to win four world championships and a bronze medal at the Olympics,” he says. “Doug coached wrestling in Lansing and built a program that is literally envied in the area.”

Dake passed away last month at age 62.

In April, the Lansing Town Board passed a resolution to support naming the bridge after former slave Peter Wheeler. Sigler adds Wheeler would be a “fine person to name the bridge after.”
