ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — On October 7th, 2026, the Ithaca Common Council voted 9-1 in favor of a moratorium that stops permits from being issued for certain Cornell events.

According to WSKG, the moratorium is aimed at “Cornell University, residential and nonresidential sorority and fraternity student organizations affiliated with Cornell University, general student organizations affiliated with Cornell University, and university student organizations affiliated with Cornell University…”, although the ban does not apply to “constitutionally protected” First Amendment rights such as “peaceable assembly” or the “exercise of free speech”.

The moratorium was proposed by Ithaca Mayor Robert Cantelmo after the recent attention brought to the alleged gang rape that took place at a Cornell frat in 2024 and the institution’s handling of it.

The Cornell Daily Sun says that the ban is set to end November 5th, 2026. Read more about the details of the meeting and moratorium on the Cornell Daily Sun’s website here.
