LANSING, NY (607NewsNow) — A September 29th Facebook post from No Data Center FLX has announced that the Lansing Town Board is interested in drafting a ban of data centers.
After a special Town Board meeting on Tuesday, September 29th, where 36 out of 38 speakers who took the floor were against the proposed data center, the board is looking at starting the process of drafting a data center ban.
In May 2026, a Tompkins County Supreme Court Judge affirmed the right to challenge the Lansing Zoning Board of Appeals’ (ZBA) classification of a proposed data center as a permissible land use. In June 2026, a coalition of groups held a press conference before a Lansing Town Board meeting, emphasizing community opposition to TeraWulf’s proposed Cayuga Data campus project.
Tompkins County Legislator Mike Sigler, who primarily represents Lansing, said the following in a Facebook post regarding the meeting:
“Almost a year after Terawulf, a data center builder and operater, first submitted plans to convert the shuttered coal fired power plant in Lansing into a data center, the town of Lansing board directed its attorney to write a resolution to ban data centers Tuesday night. It looks like the the town anticipates a lawsuit with this action, setting aside half a million dollars in next year’s budget for legal costs.” Read the full post from Sigler’s Facebook page here.
While the specifications of what is under review or is being drafted is up to the Town Board, several Town Board members voiced interest in seeing what a ban would look like on paper during the special meeting as opposed to a moratorium, which several members expressed concern over for the prospect of creating a prolonged, costly process for both the town and taxpayer. The full recording of the meeting can be found here, with the Town Board’s comments regarding drafting a ban beginning approximately at the 2:01:45 mark.
