GROTON, NY (607NewsNow) – A 41-year-old woman is facing charges in Groton.

On August 27, Tompkins County Sheriff’s deputies, including members of the Crisis Alternative and Response (CARE) Team, were called to a home in the 700 block of Elm Street Extension around 10:30 a.m. for a welfare check.

When authorities arrived, the sole resident, Katie Pesold, allegedly threatened them with a kitchen knife. Law enforcement assessed the situation and believed Pesold posed no immediate threat to others, so they backed off to establish a safer engagement plan. Deputies remained on the scene to monitor and de-escalate the situation.

On August 28, officers returned to the residence and took Pesold into custody without incident.

“I would like to recognize the deputies and CARE Team members involved for their patience and commitment to de-escalation throughout this incident,” said Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne. “Their decision to disengage when appropriate, maintain observation, and allow time for a safer intervention ultimately resulted in the situation being resolved without injury.”

Pesold is charged with criminal possession of a weapon and menacing a police officer, both felonies. She was held for arraignment.
