The scam uses information obtained from publicly available records, frequently containing accurate personal, property, or project information in an attempt to appear credible. Cortland County urges residents not to make any payment after receiving a questionable invoice that claims to be affiliated with Cortland County unless the invoice has been independently verified.
According to an August 24th press release from Cortland County, residents are encouraged to:

- Be cautious of unexpected requests for payment.
- Independently verify any invoice that appears to come from Cortland County.
- Avoid contact with the sender using information provided on a questionable invoice.
