ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The City of Ithaca is helping residents beat the heat.
Public Information Officer Alan Karasin says the Cooling Center at GIAC and Alex Haley Pool are extending their normal hours of operation for anyone seeking relief.
GIAC’s Cooling Center will stay open until 7:30 p.m. tonight and tomorrow. It will close at 6 p.m. on July 3. Alex Haley Pool will be open from noon until 9 p.m. each day through Sunday, July 5.
“High temperatures combined with high humidity can quickly become dangerous, particularly for older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions,” said Ithaca Fire Chief Michael Moody. “We encourage everyone to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, and check on neighbors, family members, and friends who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. A simple phone call or visit can make a significant difference during extreme heat events.”
Additionally, the Cass Park Pool is open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The Stewart Park Splash Pad is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Ithaca area remains under an extreme heat warning until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 3.
