ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A local cleanup effort is getting funding from the federal government.

On June 24, Senator Chuck Schumer announced that $1.5 million is headed to the Southern Tier to support cleaning efforts at contaminated sites.

According to Schumer’s Office, Ithaca’s Waterfront Development Area is listed as a priority, including the 2-acre former Fire Training Center site on Pier Road. A former shoe factory in Johnson City is among other projects receiving funding.

It’s part of $14.3 million earmarked for Brownfield sites across the state. The money comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law. Read more from Schumer’s Office here.
