CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — The Cortland Fire Department will soon have a new leader.
Chief Wayne Friedman is retiring at the end of July. He has served the city for over 23 years and previously served as a dispatcher for other agencies.

“Chief Friedman’s career represents the very best of public service,” Cortland Mayor Scott Steve said. “For more than two decades, he has served as a friend and a mentor to countless members of our community, especially myself. He has led with professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication to this department and our community. His influence extends far beyond emergency response; he has helped shape the culture, strength, and future of this department. We are deeply grateful for his service and wish him nothing but happiness and fulfillment in retirement.”
A ceremonial walkout will take place July 31 at 3 p.m. at the Cortland Fire Headquarters on Court Street. A reception will immediately follow at the McNeil Hub on Main Street.
