ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Crews in Cayuga Heights are trying a cutting-edge approach to snowplowing.

Public Works Director Mike Wiese considers it a nice change.

“The newer technology that has been presented is a steel cutting edge that is cut up into one-foot pieces and they’re all spring-loaded,” he says. “So, it helps follow the contour of the road.”

Wiese adds the approach is beneficial in two ways.

“It scrapes more snow off of the road, and allows us to use less salt to have to melt that.”

He says there hasn’t been much snow this season.
