LANSING, N.Y. (WHCU) – A bridge in Tompkins County has been recognized as one of the best in the country.

The State Route 34B Bridge in Lansing has won the 2024 American Institute of Steel Construction and National Steel Bridge Alliance’s Prize Bridge Merit Award. The award is given every two years and is the highest honor in the U.S. structural steel industry.

The Lansing bridge was selected as a winner under the Medium Span category for engineering innovation, unique aesthetics, and advanced construction techniques. Completed in July 2022 for $18.4 million, it is the longest structure in New York with the slanted steel leg support style and has an estimated service life of 75 years.

“This award-winning bridge is a testament to New York’s dedication to innovation and the pursuit of excellence as we continue to prioritize infrastructure for all modes of travel,” said Governor Hochul. “As a vital transportation link in the Southern Tier, the Route 34B bridge significantly enhances connectivity, sustainability, and accessibility while supporting tourism and economic development throughout the Southern Tier.”

The bridge carries nearly 7,500 vehicles a day.
