BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WHCU) — Congressman Marc Molinaro wants the FCC to help reroute calls to the national 988 crisis line to local call centers.
Calls to 988 are automatically routed based on the caller’s area code, not their location. Along with announcing the bipartisan bill, Molinaro also issued a statement:
“911 calls are rerouted to local call centers. There’s no reason we can’t do the same for 988. My bipartisan bill convenes a group of logistical and subject matter experts to come up with a plan to roll this technology out. We know the 988 Lifeline is a proven life-saving tool and should maximize its full potential.”
The nationwide 988 line was created in 2005.
