UPDATE 11/30: The Ovid Fire Department shares that the dog visited the vet and only suffered soft tissue damage, no broken bones. He continues to recover with his family.

OVID, N.Y. (WHCU) – A dog is safe with its family after fast action by firefighters in Seneca County.

The Ovid Fire Department responded to a report of a man and an elderly dog in need of rescue on Sunday afternoon. The pair had been hiking when they slipped on wet leaves and fell nearly 200 feet down a local ravine. The dog was able to move to a more appropriate spot for rescue but was unable to climb out of the ravine on its own.

The Seneca County Rope Rescue Team assisted with a rappel and basket retrieval of the pup, which sustained minor injuries.  The dog’s owner was unharmed.
