HORSEHEADS, NY (607NewsNow) – A major water problem in Horseheads.
According to WENY-TV, the village is losing over 160 million gallons of water per year from leaks in the water system.
Mayor Kevin Adams says that’s about 60% of Horseheads’ yearly water supply, a full 40% higher than the state’s acceptable annual water loss threshold. If it’s not fixed by September 2027, the village will be fined by the Susquehanna River Basin Commission.
The village is installing new valves on the pipe and working with engineers to address the issues. Adams adds they’re looking into grant opportunities to fund further repairs and replacements.
It follows recent news that mobile parks in the Chemung County village of Millport are leaking over 20,000 gallons of water a day.
Meantime, Chemung County remains under a drought warning issued by the DEC.
