TRUXTON, NY (607NewsNow) — A marker noting a historic baseball game goes up tomorrow.

In Truxton, the historic marker gets installed at the site of a major league game between the New York Giants and Truxton Giants in front of over 7,600 fans on a steamy August day in 1938. The marker also celebrates manager John McGraw, who was a native of the Cortland County town.

“John was proud of his Truxton background,” said local resident William Swisher, who is chairing the event. “He donated funds to build a grandstand on the John J. McGraw field, where the historic marker event and game takes place.” Swisher and his late wife donated money for the marker.

According to a news release, “John J. McGraw grew up and played local baseball in Truxton and became a Hall of Fame baseball manager after a respectable playing career. Over his career, McGraw won 2,763 games (third only to Connie Mack and Tony LaRussa), 10 National League pennants and three World Series. He owns the record for the longest winning streak in Major League Baseball history. McGraw pioneered tactics still used today, including the Baltimore chop, the hit-and-run, and the squeeze play.”

The installation and dedication, which will include live music and food, is tomorrow at the baseball field on Railroad Avenue in Truxton starting at one o’clock.
