ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Alderperson Kayla Matos is being asked to resign.
The Tompkins County GOP also wants the district attorney to rescind a plea agreement made with Matos following her drunk driving arrest in 2021. “She is one of the leaders and a rising star of the local Democrat Party and even with what looks like a generous plea deal, failed to fulfill it,” party chair Chantel Marquis said.
The Cornell Daily Sun reports Matos, who won her Common Council seat in 2023, has not yet paid a $500 fine that was part of her guilty plea. In March 2024, DA Matt Van Houten issued a civil judgment order against Matos, which is a formal demand to pay a fine.
“She’s had years to make this right and has not. I would think that as a leader, she would want to set a good example,” Marquis said.
Matos did not respond to a request for comment from 607NewsNow.
