MORAVIA, NY (607NewsNow) – The Moravia Central School District has reportedly settled with its former superintendent.

According to The Auburn Citizen, the school board has approved a $285,000 severance agreement for John Birmingham, who took a voluntary, unexplained leave of absence last month.

On June 9, the Moravia CSD Board of Education made the announcement, saying the leave came at the request of Birmingham, who had a 5-year contract set to expire in 2028.

At the time, Board President Neil Stevens acknowledged in a letter to the Moravia community that the move could generate concern or speculation. He asked for cooperation and understanding “as we move forward with the care, confidentiality, and professionalism required to ensure the best interests of the district and our students.”

In addition to his severance, Birmingham will receive nearly $15,000 for unused vacation days and $122,852.50 for 157 unused sick days that will go toward his retiree health insurance premiums.

As part of the agreement, none of the benefits received by Birmingham, or any other conditions of the deal, “shall be construed as an admission of liability or wrongdoing” by Birmingham or the Moravia CSD Board of Education.

Birmingham, who had been superintendent since 2016, has agreed not to pursue legal action against the district or board.
