UPDATE – JULY 4 – 5 a.m.- NYSEG reports over 1,000 still without power in Tompkins County. Over 3,000 without power in Tioga County.

 

ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Road closures and power outages are abundant in Tompkins County.

According to NYSEG, over 3600 people are still without power as of 5 p.m. today.

Just before 2 p.m. this afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the southwestern portion of the county. Meteorologists warned the public to take shelter immediately as hail and 70+ mph winds were reported.

The tornado warning lasted about 15 minutes before it was downgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning. The storm then traveled in a southern direction.

A severe thunderstorm watch, originally forecasted to last until 10 p.m., has been cancelled.
