GROTON, NY (607NewsNow) – Twelve revitalization projects have been announced in Groton.
The village is focusing on creating public spaces, housing, business expansion, and restoring historic buildings, including the Groton Hotel.
Part of the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, funding for the work comes from a $4.5 million grant through the NY Forward program, which invests state money into smaller, rural communities.
Groton won the NY Forward grant in March 2024, joining other localities that recently received funding.
Groton NY Forward Project Details
- Groton Hotel ($953,000) – to restore historic structure into a bar and restaurant with overnight stays and short-term lets, including complete interior and exterior renovations to address water damage, finish suites, and repair HVAC systems
- Village Green ($217,000) – to transform an existing parking lot into green space complete with benches, tables, a pavilion, and a stage for community performances
- Owasco Inlet Trail and Pedestrian Bridge ($294,000) – to restore the existing pedestrian bridge, install a stone trail, create a fenced-in dog park, and increase access to Owasco Inlet by building a new pedestrian bridge and viewing platforms along the inlet
- 184 Main Street Apartments ($709,00) – to create a mixed-use building with increased space for housing and commercial tenants by performing interior and exterior renovations
- Good Neighbor Grocery Expansion ($257,000) – to update the building exterior and expand the existing grocery store into a community hub. Outdoor amenities include a deck with seating and a greenhouse
- Small Project Fund ($334,000) – to create a fund that would support the growth and establishment of small local businesses
- Multi-Unit Apartment Project ($136,000) – to convert vacant, neglected properties for downtown housing and beautification of Church Street
- Firehouse Market Square ($416,000) – to demolish the existing firehouse building at 108 E Cortland Street and create a multi-use community space featuring a pavilion, electricity, and a new parking area with EV chargers
- Baker Miller Lumber Loading Dock and Storage Facility ($239,000) – to build a new pole barn and loading dock that will improve safety and allow larger product lines for customers
- Historic Main Street Building Renovation ($200,000) – to restore a neglected building with exterior brick repairs and upgrade existing housing units
- Groton Historical Building Improvements ($260,000) – to improve ADA accessibility, enhance exhibit space, and upgrade HVAC systems
- Fitness Center Expansion ($485,000) – to expand existing fitness offerings and create community space with interior and exterior improvements, including new flooring, better parking, new solar lighting, and roof
