ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — One Ithaca leader aims to make the city safer for transgender people.

Alderperson Jorge DeFendini says he’ll introduce legislation later this month at the City Administration Committee meeting.

“I’m personally bringing a discussion item for the City of Ithaca to consider adopting a resolution and an ordinance to identify the city as a sanctuary for transgender and gender nonconforming folks who might be coming to the city seeking gender-affirming care or therapy, and not having to worry about being persecuted if they’re coming from states or municipalities that have adopted more regressive policies pertaining to the challenges that they’re dealing with.”

Last summer, Ithaca became a sanctuary city for abortions.
