SLATERVILLE SPRINGS, NY (607NewsNow) -Foodnet Meals on Wheels is expanding its Community Dining program.
The nonprofit group is now serving fresh, hot meals for lunch every Tuesday at the Slaterville Springs Fire Station. Doors open at 11 a.m., and food is served from 12-12:30 p.m. Anyone 60 or older is welcome to attend.
“Social isolation and loneliness were declared a national epidemic by the U.S. Surgeon General in 2023 and are an especially growing problem in older adults,” said Executive Director Aly Evans, Foodnet Meals on Wheels. “Research shows that social isolation can increase depression, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and many other serious health problems.”
The new location expands upon the program that began at Ithaca’s Titus Towers over 25 years ago. A registered dietician plans each meal based on the nutritional needs of an older, inactive adult while considering caloric and sodium intake.
“By providing hot, delicious, and nutritious meals in a community space, our Community Dining program allows our older neighbors to enjoy a meal and socialize with others, which could help alleviate some of these negative impacts of loneliness for some people,” added Evans.
The meal is free, but voluntary and confidential contributions are accepted. Registration is required in advance at (607)-266-9553. Foodnet Meals on Wheels asks those planning to attend to register by 3 p.m. on Fridays for the following week’s meal.
Community Dining is being conducted in partnership with Slaterville’s Caregiver Respite program.
