ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Big Red fans had plenty to cheer about on Saturday.
The Cornell men’s hockey team defeated Yale 5-1 in the opening round of the ECAC playoffs. Four of Cornell’s goals were scored in the third period.
Cornell Head Coach Mike Schafer said his team kept the pressure on.
“We just kept plugging away,” he said. “There’s no quit in Yale.”
Schafer added his team did well on the penalty kill in the third period.
“We had some great clears, got pucks down the ice,” he said.
Big Red fans cheered whenever the puck dumped into Yale’s zone. Schafer said the home crowd at Lynah Rink was a big part of the action.

“Hockey is beloved here,” he said.
Saturday marked Schafer’s final game on home ice. He’s been the head coach at Cornell since 1995.
Schafer didn’t want his tenure to end with a loss.
“It would’ve been tough to walk off that ice getting your season ended,” he said.
Cornell next heads to Colgate for a best-of-three series. Game one is on Friday at 7 p.m.
The series will be broadcast on WHCU. Coverage for each game will start at 6:30 p.m.
The winner of the series will advance to the ECAC semifinals.
