ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — An Ithaca landmark is getting a national nod.

Lavender Hill has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The commune was opened in 1973 by a group of LGBTQ writers and activists. According to Historic Ithaca, “Lavender Hill was one of a number of experimental communities established in the vicinity of the city of Ithaca and Cornell University in the 1970s. While they all variously supported aspects of the counterculture such as anti-authoritarianism, collectivity, environmentalism, and the embrace of a simpler way of life, Lavender Hill is significant as a rare surviving example of a rural commune built by and for the LGBTQ community.”

Historic Ithaca credits Dr. Jeffry Iovannone’s research for Lavender Hill’s addition to the registry.
