TRUMANSBURG, NY (607NewsNow) — A one-of-a-kind work of art from Jay Seaman marks a new beginning for New Park Event Venue & Suites.
Owner of New Park Sara Abernethy says that she had been passively looking for a sign to mark the entrance to the wedding and event venue for about two years. Having had trouble with customers locating it and retaining some mystery about what lies beyond the fences of New Park, the new sign offers clarity and visibility for anyone that drives past it.
Jay Seaman, a local artist, specializes in metal and wood sculptures and has over thirty years of experience honing in on his craft. His sculptures have been installed both nationally and internationally, building a reputation for creating grand monuments that embody various meanings for each client.
The sign for New Park is about twelve feet tall, with a green frog made from copper sitting atop a timber frame from Woodhouse, a company owned by Jay Seaman’s brother Pat Seaman. Abernethy took a tour of Seaman’s studio and decided that the frog was a must have for New Park, encapsulating the whimsical and woodland feel of the location.
“I make things because I want to make them, I don’t always have a specific use for them in mind. I can always find a home for them and find somebody that sees a meaning in it that they want to portray when they display it,” Seaman says of his sculptures.
After graduating from college, Seaman spent his time carving birds out of wood, studying them and taking the time to make them look as realistic as possible. Learning how to weld in order to be able to create metal legs for the birds he carved, the doors to the world of metalworking opened up for him and presented even more creative opportunities for his sculptures.
Through his years of creating, he has become proficient in the process of bringing an idea to life.
“I never really have to sketch a piece; I’ll have an idea in my head and just go from there. I’m always envisioning how the sculptures will come together, whether it’s while I’m falling asleep, driving, just hanging out… I find that the answer always comes to me. Wanting to get better and improve on what I’ve done before is what gets me out of bed in the morning, being able to create is a very rewarding occupation.”
Collaborations between local artists and businesses such as the one between Seaman and New Park hold more significance than some may realize.
“It’s a no brainer; it keeps the money local. People like me are very capable of producing the artwork that local businesses may want or need, so it doesn’t make sense to shell out money to faraway artists who make uniform pieces from a catalog that aren’t specific to the local area. There are plenty of local artists, wherever you go, that would love the opportunity to create for the community they live in.”
