ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) — A position at Ithaca City Hall could receive more pay.

The Common Council is considering more than doubling the mayor’s salary. Alderperson Clyde Lederman said the position is “dramatically underpaid.”

“The mayor is actually the lowest-paid city employee,” he said. “The mayor makes under minimum wage, about $14.50 an hour.”

Alderperson David Shapiro said the increase is unnecessary because Ithaca now operates under a city manager.

“The role of the mayor should be lessened and lessened,” he said.

The mayor currently makes $30,000. The raise would bring the pay to $62,500.

A local law must pass before the raise is approved.
