ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Tompkins County officials will ask Albany to extend the local sales tax.
Shoppers in the county currently pay an additional one percent tax, on top of the three percent from the state. Legislator Greg Mezey says it reduces the burden on homeowners.
“We have such a property tax intensive budget and financial model,” he says. “This is a way for us to diversify our income.”
The county aims to extend the tax through November 2025. State officials will consider approving the request.
