CORTLAND, NY (CortacaToday) – State Senator Lea Webb is encouraging Cortland County residents to voice their opinion.

With a looming vote from the Public Service Commission (PSC), Webb asks you to oppose energy rate hikes from National Grid. The proposed increases could cost a household an extra $440 per year for electricity and gas.

“At a time when many families are already struggling with inflation and high utility bills, these rate hikes are unacceptable,” said Webb. “My office regularly hears from constituents who are dealing with inaccurate bills, service disruptions, and late fees. This proposed increase would only deepen the burden on low-income and marginalized families in Upstate New York.”

Potential Increase Effects in Cortland County

  • Electric Delivery Revenue: National Grid is requesting an additional $525 million annually, which would result in a 20% increase in electricity delivery charges. This could potentially raise the average household’s monthly electric bill by $19, or 15%.
  • Gas Delivery Revenue: The proposal includes a $148 million increase for gas delivery, raising gas bills by 28%. For residential customers, this could mean an average increase of $18 a month, or 20%.

Webb wants you to reach out to elected officials and the company.

“It is crucial that the PSC understand how these hikes would negatively impact our community,” added Webb. “I encourage National Gride customers in Cortland County to voice their concerns to the Public Service Commission and the Governor. Community voices are critical in opposing these rate hikes.”
